A Sweater for Lumpito / Pablo Picasso's Dachshund Lump

Elementary Students in grades K-3 just finished a project, A SWEATER FOR LUMPITO, based on Pablo Picasso and his beloved dachshund Lump, whom he referred to as Lumpito. Picasso loved Lump so much that Lump appeared in 51 of Picasso's paintings.

I began this lesson with reading the class the book "Lumpito and the Painter from Spain." Students munched on Scooby Doo graham crackers during the story. Afterwards we looked at a variety of paintings that Picasso included Lump in. Students were asked what kind of shapes Picasso used to make Lump in his paintings.  We shared and discussed geometric and organic shapes.

Students made dachshunds using a template that I created. Older students made their own templates. Afterwards they developed their ideas in their sketchbooks for their sweater design.

The final dachshunds sported coats of many bright colors in a Picassoish style. They loved their miniature paper Lumps so much that they gave them names. There was lots of barking going on in the classroom once they were completed. :)
